Donie and the Dancing Master. Donie agus an Máistir Damhsa.
A few years ago, while researching my family tree, I came across a letter in the Folklore Collection written by my late father, Donal Clarke. Around the same time, as I searched for inspiration for new jewellery designs, the image of The Dancing Master kept appearing in my sketches.
I soon discovered that dancing masters were travelling teachers who journeyed from village to village throughout Ireland, teaching dance steps and helping to keep our rich traditions of music and dance alive. The phrase The Dancing Master evokes a time when dance was at the heart of community life and cultural identity. It speaks of heritage, storytelling, movement, rhythm, and the passing of knowledge from one generation to the next.
Deeply rooted in Irish tradition, this theme captured my imagination and inspired the creation of The Dancing Master. Following this design, I went on to create The Irish Dancing Cailín and The Irish Dancing Baby, completing the collection and celebrating the joy, spirit, and continuity of Irish dance across generations.
